16th Annual Flower Show of New England Presented by the Rhode Island Spring Flower & Garden Show

    Friday, January 09, 2009

    By: Susan Blicker

The Boston flower show will not be a part of the New England horticultural scene in the winter of 2009, according to members of the Board of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, which has been the Boston show's sponsor for the past 150 years. Instead, the Rhode Island Spring Flower and Garden Show will incorporate some of the Boston's show landscapers, vendors and the Massachusetts Horticultural Society in its 2009 Flower Show held in the RI Convention Center, February 19 through 22.

The Massachusetts Horticultural Society is the first of its kind in the United States, founded 180 years ago. The RI Flower Show has invited the Society and its members to join our 16th theme, “Gardens of the World”, plan a floral vignette and purchase Show tickets at a discounted price. We feel that their presence will assure their members and devoted show attendees that the Show will go on this year, albeit in Providence.

Let nature take you to places you’ve never seen before, as you venture through 30 gardens, with expeditions into the Australian Outback, over to Mexico and South America with Mayan and Incan ruins, and into Tuscany, Spain and more. Let your compass guide you away from the harsh winter of the North, and instead on a journey with warmth that will have you soaking up the sunny reminder of spring in no time, as green grass returns, exotic flowers bloom, and a trip to paradise is only a $17 ticket away.

The adventure begins with your show “passport,” the only thing you’ll need this winter for a trip to destinations you’ve perhaps only dreamed of – and you won’t want to miss a single sight or sound of nature, because once your book is stamped completely, you will enter for the opportunity to win an extended version of this 4 day glance around the globe, with a free trip being given away by AAA.

That's not all that will beckon you at this year's flower show. Traverse through miles of marketplace vendors, over 200, with all the tools and equipment you’ll need for your own backyard gardening adventures this spring. Hear lectures from horticulture experts that have traveled far and wide to bring you all you need to know about getting your plants page 1 of 2 and flowers going places as well, including organic gardening tips, or view demonstrations for a helpful, hands-on approach.

It may be cold outside, but the possibilities inside are endless – Special events at this year's show include “Date Night in the Gardens,” for couples who want a special evening that's just a little different from the usual Friday or Saturday night routines. Keep your kids’ attention with the comic but educational Marvelous Marvin as well as many other events that will entertain and instruct. Admission is free to children six and under.

Get an early start to the adventure that awaits you and attend our annual preview party. You won’t go hungry at this special event, with cuisine that will astonish and amaze you along with the scenery, provided by some of Providence's best restaurant, with proceeds going to the Rhode Island Food Bank to ensure that locals in need do not go hungry as well.

Advanced tickets are on sale and are available at 32 AAA outlets in New England. Group rates and a variety of special packages are available, including tours of the best sights and tastes that Providence can offer, with discounted stays at local hotels. This adventure is one grand escape, so don’t miss your ticket to a horticultural melting pot that brings adventure, warmth and beauty, all with a promise of spring.
